Located in the high desert in Arizona, a return client approached us to help to make their dream home a reality. We deployed several low-tech best architectural design practices in regards to energy consumption and managing interior comfort in an intense climatic location in this building. Using climatic modelling software and very accurate and rich weather data gathered at a local airfield to simulate site-specific heat, rain, humidity and other natural forces acting on the building to shape its major spaces, locate operable windows and inform mechanical systems design. Our desire to allow the local materials and landscape inform our design are shown in the scale, volume and finishes of the house inside and out. Also, perhaps most importantly, we took very seriously the need for age in place design and removed all barriers from the building. There are no steps, ample passageways and dignified separated living spaces that can hibernate when not in use to save energy.
